Mason Sinks Buzzer Beater To Dismiss The Suns

A battle between rivals ensued on Christmas afternoon between the San Antonio Spurs and the Phoenix Suns.  The two dominant big men, Shaq and Amare had fantastic games scoring 48 points and 25 rebounds between them.  This still wasn’t enough to defeat the 4 time champs.

Late in the fourth it was a back and forth battle with Grant Hill making a backdoor layup to give the Suns a 2 point lead with 4 seconds left on the clock.  After the Spurs called a timeout, Parker drove the lane and dished the ball to the newcomer Roger Mason in the corner where he sank a buzzer beater 3 point shot to give the victory to the Spurs with a score ending 91-90.

The three stars for San Antonio, Duncan, Parker and Ginobili had 63 points between them.  It was actually a poor shooting night for the Spurs team with a low team shooting percentage of only 41%.  This still didn’t stop the methodical Gregg Popovich from remaining calm and running their set plays.  The Spurs never panicked and hung in there throughout the game, like they usually do.  Now that the Spurs are healthy, watch out for the Texas team to make a strong run and end up in the top of the heap in the Western Conference.

Orlando Pummels Hornets On Christmas Day

Starting off the 5 game barrage of NBA basketball games on Christmas was the New Orleans Hornets against the home team Orlando Magic.  Too the surprise of many, the Hornets appeared lifeless and got beaten down bad.  The Magic took control early and completely dominated the whole game winning with a final score of 88-68.

Chris Paul who holds the record of 108 consecutive games with a steal, couldn’t muster up one, and the streak got stopped.  Byron Scott the head coach of the Hornets seemed very peeved and removed his starters early in the fourth quarter.

Dwight Howard was honored by the stadium giving away over 17,000 Superman T-Shirts to the fans in attendance, and he proved his dominance by scoring 12 points with 15 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.  He currently is the leader this season in rebounds per game and blocks per game.  Hedo Turkoglu was the high man for the Magic with 20 points and Rashard Lewis was right on his tail with 18 points.  Mickael Pietrus led the bench players with 11 points on 4 for 8 shooting.

The Magic are playing excellent ball this year and they have a record to back it up.  They are one of the more exciting teams to watch in the NBA and are going to try and make a run in the Playoffs against the dominant Celtics and Cavaliers.  Whether they have all of the pieces to surpass the 2 elite teams in the Eastern Conference is yet to be determined.
